This study examined how sense of self, operationalized as independent and interdependent self-construal, may moderate the suicide ideation of Japanese, Asian American and European American young adults between 18 to 39 years. Joiner's (2015) Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS) informed the study's hypotheses. This was the first known cross-cultural study conducted with Japanese participants from mainland Japan utilizing the ITS. Findings indicated that Japanese participants endorsed significantly higher levels of suicide ideation than Asian and European American participants. Perceived burdensomeness was a strong predictor of suicide ideation for Japanese participants beyond depression but not for Asian American or European American participants. Thwarted belongingness did not predict suicidality for all ethnic groups. An interaction effect between perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness was observed only for Asian American participants. An independent self-construal had a buffering effect of suicide ideation for Japanese participants when they endorsed high perceived burdensomeness.
