Thesis (D.B.A.)--Capella University, 2018.
The research study focused on the experiences of product developers and legal representatives working in high technology industries, and how these professionals make decisions to implement protections of their intellectual property during new product development. The study included three research questions: How do innovation stakeholders and legal representatives working in new product development implement knowledge sharing? How do innovation stakeholders and legal representatives who work in new product development, develop strategies for intellectual property asset protections? And, how do innovation stakeholders and legal representatives who work in new product development regard competitive advantages because of their intellectual property management? This study used a qualitative case study design to explore how professionals work to develop products, customer-oriented services, operational processes and legal protections in support of their innovation. A triangulated data collection process included the review of strategic planning documentation, individual interviews of ten participants, and a focus group dialogue consisting of four participants. Three framework concepts guided this study: knowledge sharing, strategy development, and asset-protection decision making. Knowledge sharing themes included collaboration, information systems, balanced scorecard, and benchmarking. Strategy development themes included leadership, change management, and skills and capabilities. Decision making themes included business management, planning, marketing, cost-benefit analysis, and education and training. This study contributed to improving process aspects of knowledge management, strategic management and decision-making while implementing legal protections during new product development. Findings revealed interdependent factors such as planning, skills, and collaboration that reinforced the importance of knowledge assets, strategic process, and decision analysis to implement legal protections that reduce the risk of competitive disadvantages. The working knowledge of the participants, the focus group insights, and strategic documentation indicates that iterative improvement in systematic procedures and management behavior influenced decision making, adding new knowledge to the literature and communities of practice. Future research might include a large sample of technology managers involved in product or services innovations in a single quantitative study. Another research investigation could involve specific types of technology industries in geographical locations to understand factor thresholds, producing the same outcomes in decisions toward competitive advantages. Another case study example could examine how the use of technology affects intellectual property management and reveal some measure of its use during new product or service development.
