Developmental psychology is essential to human service practitioners for understanding what constitutes normal developmental patterns, as well as the problems and crises individuals commonly experience in the course of maturation. Whereas the developmental stages of the child, adolescent, and elders have been well researched, the period of midlife and adulthood has received far less attention. Levinson (1978) and his team constructed a developmental model from the interviews of 40 American men from different social classes. The purpose of this study was to expand the current knowledge of the developmental phases of the adult male life to the Chinese population. This study utilized the same in-depth biographical research methodology employed by Levinson to investigate the mid-life transition of the Chinese male. However, this study was narrower in scope and focused on the four polarities and the impact of mid-life transition on one's own dream. Nine Chinese males aged from 35 to 45 were recruited to take part in the study: three professionals, three blue collar workers, and three writers. Many common characteristics were found in this study. It was evidenced that midlife was about accepting personal constraints and grieving over the end of things that were attempted in earlier adulthood; it also seemed to be a period of gaining maturity and more opportunities. However, there were differences and variations, especially regarding the understanding of the onset of mid-life, which may have been the result of the differences between Western and Chinese cultures.
