Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare muscle activity of upper back muscles between two pull down exercises by using lat-pull down(LPD)machine and elastic resistance band(ERB). Methods: There were 10 healthy males participated in the study. Using the Borg scale, Load cell and EMG in this study. EMG activities were recorded from 5 muscles at the upper body during different pull-down exercise, using ERB and LPD machines. These recordings were normalized to EMG signals during maximal voluntary contraction. Five muscles have been analyzed during two pull down exercises were latissimus dorsi (LD), pectoralis major (PM), biceps brachii (BB), triceps brachii (TB), and posterior deltoid(PD). The exercises were performed at four levels of perceived loading reported using the Borg scale of perceived exertion: light (Borg ≤2), moderate (Borg >2–<5), heavy (Borg ≥5–<7) and near maximum (Borg ≥7). Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures was conducted for statistical analysis. The significant level was set at α = .05. Post hoc comparisons were performed using the Bonferroni test, if statistical significance was found among the groups. Results: 1. Strong associations were observed between perceived loading and Load cell signals during the pull-down exercises with ERB as well as in LPD machine. 2. In the same level of Borg scale, LPD machine is higher than ERB in Load cell force values. 3. In the concentric phase, EMG values are no significant difference in all muscles. 4. In the eccentric phase, greater normalized EMG values were found for the LD and PD in LPD machine. Conclusion: ERB may be able to increase the muscular strength of the upper back and arm muscles similar to that of the LPD exercise. Therefore, ERB can be considered a feasible alternative training method to LPD exercise, especially when the availability of training equipment is limited.
