DoS/DDoS attacks are mainly distributed today: the attacker controls several poorly protected computers, such as those without a firewall or current antivirus software and tells them to transmit traffic from all machines to the victim's computer simultaneously. So, many routers and lines in the target area get clogged up, making it hard for many legal customers to connect. Due to the tremendous variety of DoS/DDoS attacks, researchers have created many ways to test and mitigate DoS/DDoS attacks, including OpenFlow-based and P4-based solutions. P4 is a free programming language that lets end users control how networking equipment works. Currently, network functions are built from the bottom up using fixed-function switches that only have one way to forward packets. However, programmable networks may be managed "top-down" to install any capability desired by the user, which is a much more natural way. Large-scale cloud providers primarily drive the trend. If an organization has the in-house expertise to program networking chips, it can benefit from a programmable data plane. However, many enterprises do not yet have the pain points to program their networking data plane. Most enterprises can get the features and functionality they need from current data plane protocols. In this work, the experimental approach was used. The objective of the experiment was to compare and assess the performance and capabilities of OpenFlow-compatible and P4-compatible switches in mitigating DoS/DDoS attacks. The outcome may provide corporate clients with useful information and aid them in deciding which switches to select. Through experiments, this thesis intends to highlight the differences between OpenFlow-compatible and P4-compatible switches for mitigating DoS/DDoS attacks in order to assist businesses in striking a balance between the necessity for expressiveness and the convenience of implementation.
