Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 1997.
A mathematical model was developed that predicts maximum indoor air temperatures. It demonstrates the performance of the measured indoor maximum temperatures as a function of the climatic factors of outdoor dry bulb temperatures, radiation and wind velocity. The evaluation of the effect of mass was based on the correlation between the maximum and average outdoor dry bulb temperature.

Data was recorded in each building at various air and surface locations, plus indoor air velocity. Outdoor climate data was recorded for dry bulb temperature, radiation, wind velocity and direction.

Indoor maximum temperatures determine if and when air conditioning is required, and one of the objectives of this dissertation was to examine how building design parameters can reduce the need for compressor cooling in California's transitional climates.

One building was of conventional (low mass) construction and the second building was a concrete block (high mass). The buildings were tested for approximately twenty four months.

The performance of the two buildings was also modeled using DOE-2.1 E, a building performance simulation program, as part of a comparative study to identify the relative completeness and accuracy of the computer model's ability to predict the influence of thermal mass on indoor temperatures.
