This research used feminist critical science to examine Minnesota women's perceptions of the potential impact of covenant marriage legislation—legislation permitting couples to enter voluntarily into more legally binding marriages—on their lives and the lives of other women. Forty-two women participated in eight focus groups, where they learned about the legislation and discussed the anticipated consequences of the legislation with one another. Participants' opinions of the legislation were mostly negative, and their views often became more negative over the course of discussion. A number of themes describing specific critiques of the legislation are presented, along with a discussion of the values underlying the group discourse.
