At the community level, community change theory and community practice models provide information that enables community practitioners to work for community improvement.
520 # $a The three chapters that address these aims to provide conceptual tools intended to enable practitioners to understand the process by which communities deteriorate and improve, and the process by which citizens and practitioners can act to improve a community's quality of life. By presenting conceptual models of community change and community practice, this dissertation is intended to provide social workers and other practitioners with tools for alleviating community deterioration and building on community strengths in order to bring about community improvement. A basic goal of community practice is to undertake the tedious, long-term task of organizing people to work together to produce change in their behalf. The three core manuscripts within this dissertation aim to provide a road map for a more holistic and comprehensive way to achieve this goal.
520 # $a This dissertation had three major aims: (1) to review and integrate the literature related to community change and develop an integrated conceptual model of community change; (2) to use qualitative research methods to describe the organic model of community practice developed by the Executive Director of the Center for Community Action (CCA), a community-based organization in Robeson County, NC; and (3) to use qualitative research methods to describe the implementation of that community practice model in CCA's current work (i.e., in the Learning Together Project, a family support project).
