Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Fielding Institute, 1999.
Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS) is as contested a social issue as are the issues of abortion, capital punishment, and gay rights in today's society. Moral questions of the right or wrong of PAS appear to stem from religious moral, discourse. Further research is required to discern if societal notions of right and wrong regarding of PAS is from conscious rational informed and thinking position papers encyclicals, etc. or from religious subliminal programming. An analysis of archival materials, position papers, encyclicals, etc., on religious, medical, and legal discourse of the PAS debate suggests that religious discourse is most influential of these 3 discursive genres identified. This study suggests that of the discursive genres analyzed Roman Catholic discourse significantly influences the discourse and legal status of PAS. There appears to be similar strands of certain formulaic expressions that form a thread across religious, medical, and legislative domains. The strands of similarity tend to reflect discourse, which originates from Pope John Paul II's statements on Euthanasia and PAS. Apparently, if PAS is to be legalized and morally acceptable a shift from Roman Catholic discourse and political action will be important to the social change process. This study also suggests that an increase in public education and social awareness of the issue will influence the discourse and legal status of PAS. A shift from religious doctrine to informed, independent social consciousness is likely to be reflected in public opinion polls, and voting favoring PAS legalization.
