Consistent with prior research, responsibility apportionment was not significantly influenced by presentation medium. Significant differences were found in areas of attorney presentation ratings, juror interest ratings, juror attention to arguments, and quality of video and audio. These findings are discussed in light of previous research.

520 # $a Contrary to theoretical expectations, neither argument complexity nor heuristic cue were significant determinants of apportionment of responsibility. Results did advance the understanding of the role of need-for-cognition scores in rendering a verdict. Jurors high in need-for-cognition attributed significantly less responsibility to the defense when confronted with the corporate greed heuristic.
520 # $a Despite the popularity of dual process models, empirical research into their applicability in a courtroom setting is limited. This study examined the explanatory potential of dual process theories in a courtroom setting. The ability of jurors to process information was manipulated to determine if jurors with a fuller comprehension of courtroom evidence process information in accordance with theoretical projections. Arguments provided to the jurors were manipulated to determine whether heuristic cues have the same influence on verdict and verdict certainty in both high and low ability conditions. This design produced a 2 (low and high argument complexity) x 2 (strong heuristic cue, no heuristic cue) experimental design.
520 # $a Dual process models such as the elaboration likelihood and heuristic-systematic models are the culmination of over eighty years of social scientific persuasion research. These theories outline variables that influence whether a decision-maker will process decision relevant information primarily systematically or heuristically. Previous research demonstrates that decision-makers will favor a systematic or heuristic processing method depending on variables such as ability and motivation.
520 # $a This study also examined the potential of emerging computer mediated research designs. Emerging technologies make it possible to expose research participants to prerecorded digital video through computer networks and collect data on-line. To study the implications of using a computer mediated research method, the 2 x 2 study described above was expanded to a 2 x 2 x 3 (live presentation, analog prerecorded video, computer mediated) experimental design. This created a 12 group post-test only randomized experimental design.
