At p-value <.05, the statistical analyses confirmed the following findings. Hypothesis (I) was supported. Three of the five variables of Hypothesis (II) were significant: education of homeworkers, household size, and gender of homeworkers. Age of homeworker and family structure were not significant. Four of the five variables of Hypothesis (III) were significant: occupation, home-based business ownership, disruption by clients, and duration of hectic times, whereas stratum was not significant.

520 # $a Home-based business affects family space and activities and vice-versa when combined under the same roof; thus, it was important to explore family and business factors related to workplace settings to aid designers in their work with clients who have families and home-based business. Therefore, a research model was developed to explore the influence of (I) the family communication paradigm; (II) selected homeworkers' characteristics; and (III) selected home-based business characteristics, on the homeworkers' probability of working in an exclusive workspace in home-based business households.
520 # $a Home-based business can interrupt a family's quality time spent together, a family's communication patterns, the family's interrelationships, and its use of household space. This interruption can lead to conflict, disruption of family life, or reorganization of family space and workspace (Owen, Rowe, et al., 1992).
520 # $a In conclusion, homeworkers with the following characteristics were more likely to work in exclusive workspaces than others: homeworkers with the random family communication paradigm, homeworkers with higher years of education, homeworkers in larger households, male homeworkers, homeworkers in mental/intellectual occupations, homeworkers who own their own home-based business, homeworkers reporting high disruption by clients, and homeworkers reporting more hectic times.
520 # $a The findings of this study benefit interior designers, architects, economists, and social workers. They now have information about the intricate interactions between the built environment, represented by the characteristics of the workspace used by the homeworkers and the social/behavioral environment represented by the family, their communication paradigm, homeworker characteristics, and home-based business characteristics.
