Anxious Narratives: The Irish Plot in English Fictions and Polemics of the 1840s examines the attempts and ultimate failures of English writers to produce satisfying Irish plots during the troubled decade of the 1840s. Its conclusions offer insight into the work of prominent Victorian novelists and economic and political theorists, as well as illuminating English-Irish relations in the nineteenth century.

520 # $a This dissertation explores how Thackeray's and Trollope's earlier writings--- The Irish Sketch Book 1842 (1843), The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844), and The Macdermots of Ballycloran (1847)---confront Britain's guilt in its colonial rule over Ireland. These texts adapt established literary forms to contain Irish reality, mixing fiction and nonfiction, realism and the gothic. As Irish conditions deteriorated throughout the 1840s, this dissertation argues, Thackeray and Trollope tried to neutralize the anxieties raised in their previous books. Vanity Fair (1847--48) and Pendennis (1848--50) assimilate the Irish into English life as supportive shadow characters, and The Kellys and the O'Kellys (1848) imagines the native Irish and the Anglo-Irish uniting to cure the country's ills. Yet this study shows that such facile solutions could not resolve the anxieties Ireland provoked. The dissertation ends with a glance at Trollope's retrospective on 1840s Ireland, Castle Richmond (1860), in which the sufferings of the poor undermine the consolatory rhetoric of the narrator.
520 # $a Works by Sigmund Freud, Peter Brooks, Frank Kermode, and Edward Said provide the theoretical framework for this dissertation, which argues that English writers manipulated readers' sympathies toward Ireland's divided peoples, the Anglo-Irish Ascendancy and the native Irish lower class, so as to avoid the unsettling question of Britain's responsibility for Ireland's ills. The dissertation shows that essays by George Poulett Scrope, Nassau Senior, John Stuart Mill, and Charles Trevelyan define the causes for Irish problems narrowly in order to provide clear solutions. The fiction of William Makepeace Thackeray and Anthony Trollope approaches these topics more obliquely, but this study demonstrates that the concerns of the essays---lawlessness and famine---form a submerged plot visible through the interstices of the novels' main actions.
