An application of ultrashort shaped pulses is also discussed. Phase coherent pulse trains can be used to perform 2D optical spectroscopy that can study the ultrafast dynamics of molecular structures. We develop the theoretical framework of 2D IR spectroscopy using the phase cycling approach. Phase cycling schemes to obtain 2D spectra with pure absorption peakshapes are presented, that will improve the resolution of 2D IR spectra.

520 # $a Complementary to the advances in pulse shaping technology, is the development of pulse shape measurement methods. We present theoretical studies on certain limitations of the Frequency Resolved Optical Gating (FROG) pulse characterization method. We develop the theory of a new technique, known as spectral phase conjugate FROG, that overcomes these limitations.
520 # $a Full direct frequency domain shaping of mid infrared ultrashort pulses has been impossible due to the lack of available materials to modulate pulses at that wavelength. We demonstrate a novel scheme that circumvents this problem. Optical parametric amplification of short wavelength signal shaped pulses simultaneously generates longer wavelength idler pulses whose phase and amplitude profiles closely correlate with the signal pulse shape. As a proof-of-principle experiment, we produce complex shaped pulses at 1.2 mum by amplifying shaped pulses centered at 600 nm using a beta-barium borate based NOPA system. We further produce complex mid infrared (3.0--4.0 mum) shaped pulses via the same approach with a potassium niobate based OPA system. These MIR shaped pulses will be useful in coherent control experiments involving molecular vibrational modes. Issues concerning the fidelity of the parametric shape transfer process are also addressed.
520 # $a The main emphasis of this dissertation is on the development of ultrashort pulse shaping technology. Using nonlinear optical techniques, we are able to create micro-joule energy level arbitrarily shaped ultrafast laser pulses in the visible, near infrared and mid infrared region.
520 # $a We generate tunable ultrashort shaped pulses in the visible (500--700 nm) using a two-stage beta-barium borate based noncollinear optical parametric amplification (NOPA) system. The phase and amplitude profiles of the complex shaped pulses are conserved in the amplification scheme. The energy losses normally associated with the production of complex shaped pulses are eliminated.
