Adam Ferguson on civil society :
Enlightenment, community, and the market. [electronic resource] - 243 p.
Director: Steven B. Smith.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2003.
This dissertation evaluates the writings of Adam Ferguson (1723--1816) on civil society, and seeks to link his ideas about the interconnection of civil society, market, and state with current debates about civil society. Ferguson, as an early social theorist, presents a profound critique of the pathologies of civil society in his Essay on the History of Civil Society (1767), as well as an account of the ways in which civil society can promote freedom.
