My dissertation concerns three modern Japanese authors, Tayama Katai (1871--1930), Tamura Toshiko (1884--1945) and Mishima Yukio (1925--1970), and presents a collage-like illustration of modern Japanese literary history from the 1890s to the late 1960s. The main interest of this research is to show the ways these authors' bodies participate in literary production and attempt to rewrite the presumed relationship between literature and sociality. These three writers demonstrate that literary style is not the static representation of reality, but the physical shape, sonority or mode of writing that performs. Writing, like a body, moves and rests, brining forth rhythm and space. My dissertation focuses on passages where these three writers articulate writing in relation with other arts, such as poetry, painting, drawing and music, as well as modern technologies, such as photography and typeset printing. For example, Katai obtains his ideas of "flat" writing from photography and European impressionist painting; Mishima speaks about his ideal authorship through his interpretation of Tawaraya Sotatsu's screens and Antoine Watteau's painting; and Tamura emphasizes the calligraphic aspect of writing so as to resist the generic surface of typeset print. These three authors' literary works resist to be assimilated as a neatly formulated social "knowledge," yet they try to convey the vitality of "life" that contests or remains indifferent to expected sociality. All the three authors try to invent unique rhythm and space that can elude moral discourse yet can communicate via the bodily. My dissertation proclaims that such aesthetic experience has a potentiality to produce a new sociality yet to come.
