Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 2003.
The present study examines Luigi Nono's text-setting practices and their ramifications in four choral works---La terra e la compagna (1957), Cori di Didone (1958), Sara dolce tacere (1960), and Ha venido. Canciones para Silvia (1960). Nono's choral textures arise from similar procedures that give rise to complex shapes in the traditional repertoire for choir, such as the polychoral techniques of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli. However, Nono's text-setting takes its departure by distributing textual components---with the aid of serial mechanisms---throughout the ensemble so that a single performer rarely declaims an entire semantic unit. The distribution in the text dimension also manifests itself in the dimensions of pitch, duration, and dynamics, as well as between all component dimensions within a composition. Motion among several dimensions, called "multidimensional counterpoint," creates a musical environment that places heavy demands on the listener to become engaged with it. Multidimensional textures reflect specific poetic issues, described in detail in the study, and the engagement these textures provoke resonates to a high degree with the social aims of composer and poets alike.
