[electronic resource] - 226 p.
Chair: William J. Welch.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Berkeley, 2003.
The brightness temperature of Jupiter on September 27, 2000 (JD 2451815) at 28.5 GHz was determined to be 145.12 K +/- 1.8%. This value is appropriate for using Jupiter as a secondary calibration standard. With the contribution from Jupiter's synchrotron radiation removed, the thermal brightness temperature of Jupiter was 143.67 K +/- 1.8%. This is the most accurate measurement to date of the flux of Jupiter in this band.

The calibrated antenna was used to observe Jupiter. The receiver was calibrated against an ambient temperature hot load and a cold load immersed in liquid nitrogen.

The primary source of opacity in Jupiter's atmosphere at this frequency is ammonia. The datum is used to constrain models of the saturation of NH 3 in the upper atmospheric layers. It is concluded that NH3 is 1% saturated at 0.6 bar. It is confirmed that the abundance of NH 3 is significantly below solar at that pressure.

This accuracy is due to a novel method developed to compare the gain of two antennas interferometrically by measuring the ratio of the visibility amplitudes of each antenna vs. another antenna. The interferometric comparison is sensitive only to signal common to the beams of both antennas and insensitive to sidelobe response in either of the antennas being compared. Since it is the voltage gain of the antennas that is compared, a small standard horn and a large radio telescope differ by the square root of their power gain difference, and may therefore be compared directly, using a strong celestial source.

This method was used to determine the gain of a 6 m radio telescope ( Antenna 1) at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory on September 25, 2000. This gain was 62.3403 dB +/- 1.45%, at the antenna reference point inside the receiver (not immediately after the feed) which corresponds to an effective aperture of 15.09 +/- 0.22 m2.
