This dissertation consists of two empirical studies that are part of a larger research agenda. The starting point for this agenda is Behavioral Economics, a growing field of economics that incorporates robust patterns of behavior documented in psychology into economic theory. There is still resistance to behavioral models within economics, partly because much of the current evidence comes from laboratory experiments. The studies in this dissertation are part of the next stage in the behavioral economics research agenda, a move towards using field data to test behavioral models. Chapter I finds evidence of a payday spending spree in the field, using survey data collected from a national random sample in the United Kingdom. This phenomenon is difficult to explain with traditional economic theory and is suggestive of alternative, behavioral models of consumer choice. Chapter II finds evidence supporting a behavioral model of labor supply, using a custom-designed survey conducted with bicycle messengers, and electronic delivery records from bicycle messenger firms.
