In each of the sites, architecture and the media---influenced by the socio-political climate of the country---collaborated to promote nationalism by aestheticizing death and sacrifice, mass-producing images associated with the sites, and publishing tales of commendable actions that the public was encouraged to emulate. Together the three examples demonstrate a type of powerful cultural propaganda that developed over the course of several decades, and culminated with the intense nationalism of the Asia-Pacific War. Drawing from studies on the use of culture in fascist propaganda, as well as the growing research on the use of mass-media in Japanese wartime propaganda, I also identify characteristics that are commonly used in cultural propaganda not only in Japan, but also in other countries with varying political structures.

520 # $a This interdisciplinary study re-evaluates the ideological use of architecture and urban space in the promotion of nationalism and militarism in modern Japan through an historical examination of the cultural practices and politics surrounding three architectural sites in Tokyo: Yasukuni Shrine, the Imperial Palace Plaza (kokyo mae hiroba), and the chureito memorial project. At Yasukuni Shrine, glorification of war was cleverly incorporated into the kinds of popular amusement that Tokyoites had already been accustomed to since the Edo period, as well as new types of attractions such as a military museum and a panorama building. At the Imperial Palace Plaza, an urban space was transformed over time into a space Japanese people came to regard as the most prominent site to communicate with the emperor. Images symbolizing the shrine and the Plaza, along with their underlying ideologies, were mass-produced and distributed throughout Japan in the mass-media and school textbooks. In the chureito competition, a public media event functioned as a force for mass mobilization by engaging ordinary Japanese---from school children to soldiers at the front---to submit design entries or fund the construction of memorials dedicated to the concept of sacrifice for the nation.
