By exploring the ludic in politics, the first chapter considers the flag lowering ceremonies performed daily at dusk at the Wagah border by Indian and Pakistani soldiers. This panicked performance, of delineating boundaries, ritually rehearses national antagonisms engendered by the Partition. Next, I explore the profound 'unhomeliness' experienced by refugees and minorities forced to confront the breakdown of received notions of community. Here, I ask how the bewildering scene of unhomeliness, "the world in the home," leads us to imagine new forms of political communities or other cosmopolitical homes in the world. Then, I explore how the horrific gendered violence of the Partition attempts to install bodies as unambiguously sexed and ethnic. I argue that the body emerges as a political artifact, produced through acts of violence, mobilized by the competing masculinist discourses of family, community and nation. Finally, I evaluate transnational interventions into the crisis of South Asian secularism that illustrate how memories of the Partition continue to form and deform contemporary ethnic, national and transnational identities. In this way, I employ "performance" as an analytical category and consider the stage and the state as sites that perform the nation.

520 # $a This dissertation considers alternative accounts of the Partition in the performative public sphere that complicate our received official histories of Indian independence from British rule. The 1947 Partition of British India into India and Pakistan affords a crucial historic moment to examine the processes by which individuals are produced as national citizens, through complex iterative practices. I argue that the nation is a performatively constituted 'imagined community,' forged through embodied acts of violence and selective remembering. I explore the spectatorial practices that theatrically produce the nation for its national citizens through processions, flag lowering ceremonies, theatre and films. Through literary and dramaturgical analyses, I organize the performance of nationalism around four sites that evoke incommensurable memories of the Partition in the Indian national imaginary. Thus my analysis engages in looking at the multiple ways the nation is configured on stage as well as examining the theatricality of nationalism.
