In situating dramatic and legal activity in the context of the transformation of England from a predominantly oral into a largely literate society, my study explores a transitional moment at which neither writing nor speech could claim precedence. Both existed on a continuum and could fluidly supplement and stand in for each other. I examine the function of documents in oral trials, and ask how live speech was represented both in manuscripts and on the printed page. The vocal production of written words was understood as a means of releasing living voices encapsulated in documentary records---a transaction that was metaphorically aligned with necromancy, and could come dangerously close to its occult other. Through a reading of incidents of accidental conjuring, I analyze the divergent ways in which Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare harnessed the performative energies at their disposal. Shifting my attention from the courtroom and the theatre to the lawyer's study and the printshop, I describe how jurists read documents with a view to their future vocal iteration (and to their origin in speech), and explore the ways in which playwrights (Jonson, Thomas Kyd, and Shakespeare) and printers negotiated the twin challenges of bringing written words to life and capturing live speech in writing.

520 # $a My approach combines the methods and theoretical tenets of a number of fields. The history of the book and of reading comes into dialogue with postmodern performance studies and deconstructive modes of critique (to which my dissertation hopes to provide a historicist supplement). While focusing on traditionally canonical authors, my study stresses the pivotal role of reporter-figures in the transmission of every text, such as actors, court clerks, listeners, compositors, printers, publishers, readers, and editors.
520 # $a This dissertation reconstructs the conditions of scripted speech in early modern England. Focusing on the two related performative practices of criminal law and the theatre, I trace a logic of substitution that governed the construction of authority and authenticity in judicial and theatrical performances: substitution of writing for speech and vice versa, of report or representation for direct presentation, of persona for person, of typography for calligraphy.
