Tennant, Christopher Carey.
The return to Los Loros :
The story of a new Guatemalan community of returned refugees [electronic resource] - 354 p.
Adviser: Sally Falk Moore.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 2004.
One major theme is the Lorenos' interaction with the Guatemalan revolutionary movement. Ultimately, most Lorenos felt deeply betrayed by the guerrilla and their promises of swift victory to be followed by peace and prosperity. Yet their participation in the revolutionary movement was important to their development as politically-aware community builders.

The primary theme, however, is Lorenos' quest for community. For Loreno families and individuals, community meant living in peace with others, having their individual rights respected, having a house and agricultural land of their own, and, in time, prospering. Loreno community successes are noteworthy, surpassing those of many other rural Guatemalan communities. Activists became political leaders and human rights promoters; religious institutions, both Catholic and Mayan, flourished; there was a powerful women's organization; a school and a health clinic were built and staffed; participatory community assemblies took place. In the end, difficulties in attaining "tranquilidad" must not be seen as failures in community building.

This dissertation is an ethnographic study of the creation and early development of "Los Loros," a community formed in Guatemala in 1995 by returning Mayan refugees who had come together in Mexico after fleeing the "scorched earth" offensive of the Guatemalan Army in the early 1980's. I document the Lorenos' diverse paths in search of "tranquilidad" and show how that search faltered because of problems accumulated along the way: the trauma of the Army's violence, marijuana growing that had started in Mexico, and factionalism fueled by individual ambition.
