Colombian current civilian conflict is the longest and the most intense in terms of the number of armed actors involved and the total number of lives lost. However, secondary effects of this conflict have not been studied yet. In this dissertation I will test whether political violence could be affecting infant mortality rates and infants' health outcomes in Colombia during the past decade.

In this dissertation I will test whether political violence could be affecting infant mortality rates and infants' health outcomes in Colombia during the past decade.
520 # $a Cross-sectional estimations suggest a negative relationship between violence and infant survival as well as other infant health outcomes, such as low birth weight. Finally, maternal fixed effects estimation reinforces such results, and revealed that male infants are more prone to suffer the negative consequences of violence on health outcomes. Additionally, these results suggest that women living in violent areas, where access to prenatal control becomes difficult and neonates health care is not fully provided, are more prone to experience an infant's death or to have lower performance on their infant's health outcomes.
520 # $a I have used information collected at the municipality level on homicide rates and armed actions perpetrated by the outlaw-armed groups from 1990 to 2000. This information, combined with infant mortality rates and other covariates, allows me to analyze the effect of violence on IMR per municipalities using a fixed effect model.
520 # $a In addition, I combined the municipality level data with individual data, as this information is available from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) carried out in 2000 for Colombia. These estimations allow controlling for several important confounders both related to infant survival and health outcomes, such as weight and height at birth, available from the survey.
520 # $a These unbiased estimators suggest that as homicide rates increase by one per thousand habitants, the IMR increases by over 3 infant deaths per thousand across municipalities in the same year and 1.5 additional deaths from lagged effects, which translates into about 3,500 infant deaths per year. Similarly, those municipalities where there is lack of State security, infrastructure is being destroyed and not reconstructed and human rights violations persist, are at risk of having higher infant mortality rates than other municipalities.
