In the first part of the dissertation, I draw on Edward Said's paradigm for the emergence of postcolonial literatures in arguing that the Danish literary critic Georg Brandes's efforts to stimulate modern Danish literature and market Denmark's cultural modernity in Germany and Austria in the 1870s and 80s strive to establish Denmark's cultural independence and compensate for Denmark's political attenuation after 1864. In the subsequent chapters, I consider how depictions of Denmark in four texts respond to the image of Denmark mediated by Brandes---Theodor Fontane's Unwiederbringlich (1891), Thomas Mann's Tonio Kroger (1903), Rainer Maria Rilke's Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge (1910), and Arthur Schnitzler's Traumnovelle (1926).

In this thesis, I analyze how selected works of fin-de-siecle German and Austrian literature use re-presentations of Denmark to navigate contemporary discourses of national and cultural identity construction, particularly with regard to questions of linguistic nationalism, imperial expansion, literary decadence, and cultural modernity. By examining a variety of fictional narratives in which widely divergent literary depictions of Denmark function as the Other in relation to which German and/or Austrian identity is constructed, I demonstrate how German-speaking writers re-present Germany/Austria to itself by way of a detour, quite literally, through Denmark.

While these seminal works have been the subject of much critical attention, scholars of German literature have largely underestimated the relevance of the textual depictions of Denmark as an integral feature of these narratives. I demonstrate how Fontane employs Denmark in Unwiederbringlich as a mirror for the challenges and temptations of empire with which the new German Empire was grappling at the time. I show how Mann's novella Tonio Kroger constructs but ultimately undermines an idealized Denmark situated within a symbolic geography that locates art and decadence in the South and life and bourgeois morality in the North. I argue that Rilke's Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge challenges Brandes's insistence on Danish modernity by re-presenting Denmark as an ahistorical, supernatural space. Finally, in my study of Traumnovelle, I contend that Schnitzler deliberately "orientalizes" Denmark in order to expose the dangerous arbitrariness underlying the demonization of cultural otherness in interwar Austria.
