Nurbanu (1525-1583) was a prominent figure in Ottoman society and a great patron of imperial projects of charity, yet her record has not been studied in depth. This study concentrates on the Atik Valide Mosque Complex, which constitutes the architectural embodiment of Nurbanu's prestige, power and piety. This monumental act of charity serves as a lens that projects a telling image not only of its patroness but also the late-sixteenth century Ottoman political and social scene. The central and competitive role Nurbanu played in the political, religious and social spheres of the Ottoman state are closely reflected in the Atik Valide, whose construction coincided with a tumultuous phase in the Empire's history. By using a wide variety of Ottoman and foreign sources, this work exposes many symbolic layers of meaning specific to the Atik Valide that have not yet been elucidated while revealing the motivations and intentions of Nurbanu, who was involved in every phase of her charitable monument's construction.
