In the first chapter, I show that in all the novels of this kind of realism the texts come up against the limits of symbolic representation so that verisimilitude is broken with an oniric or delirious logic. Nevertheless, this rupture does not lead to disarticulation---as was the case with the avant-garde---but generates a direct and ostensive prose. In chapter two, I argue that these texts can continue to proceed with an ostensive language onto something that is set as foreign to the symbolic because they are transformed into photographic images. The technical innovation of this aesthetic does not lie in this inclusion of the oniric and the photographic---surrealism had already deployed both strategies---but in what such techniques enable, namely the creation of an "indexical effect" that bypasses the previous reliance on a representative structure. In the third chapter I argue that these transformations allow certain marginal subjectivities to be included without the pity that had hindered the political potential of classical realism. The new realism, I conclude, should be thought of as a delirious, indexical and pitiless realism that represents an adequate aesthetic for the present while retaining the possibility of saying something about the present.

The chapters are organized around three characteristics of the new realism: the use of a crude and ostensive prose; the attempt to construct an illusion of reality; and the demand to represent the present. The new narratives have inherited these characteristics from classic realism and as such they can be conceptualized as realisms in spite of their evident passage through the avant-garde.

The objective of this dissertation is to study the constitution of a new kind of realism in contemporary Argentine and Brazilian literature. I analyze not merely the return of old realist themes---sex, poverty, violence, disease, etc---but describe how this return represents a transformation of the classic realist aesthetic as well. Analyzing texts by Cesar Aira, Caio Fernando Abreu, Sergio Chejfec y Joao Gilberto Noll, I identify an interaction of avant-garde techniques and realism that I argue is the defining characteristic of this new aesthetic. I argue further that via this new common mode of articulation these authors are able to avoid problems of readability and self-referentiality that plague the avant-garde, while at the same time side stepping the political and epistemological traps of the category of representation.
