520 # $a The finite temperature moment of inertia determines the spin distribution of nuclear levels at not too low temperatures. We propose a simple pairing model for calculating this nuclear moment of inertia. The results of the model are compared to the SMMC results for nuclei in the iron region. Strong odd-even effects observed in the SMMC moment of inertia are well reproduced by the model using a number-parity projection.
520 # $a The shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) approach enables calculations in much larger shell model spaces than conventional methods can treat. However, its applicability when truncated to one major shell is limited to temperatures below &sim; 1.5--2 MeV. We develop an extension of the shell model theory to higher temperatures by including the effects of the full space via an independent-particle model. We show that the back-shifted Bethe formula for the many-particle level density is valid to higher temperatures T &sim; 4 MeV. We also apply this extended shell model theory to spin-projected observables, and in particular to level densities and heat capacities. The spin-projected heat capacities in even-even nuclei show a signature of the pairing transition for small even values of total angular momentum. This signature disappears rapidly as the angular momentum increases.
