Barbarino, Alessandro.
Essays in industry dynamics.
- 57 p.
Adviser: James J. Heckman.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2006.
The present thesis contains a collection of contributions on industry dynamics. The first chapter contains an competitive industry dynamics model with learning where firms are uncertain about the size of the market. This uncertainty and the associated learning leads to sudden shakeouts and market crashes. The second contribution is on the effects of the business cycle on the composition of unemployment. The chapter explores, using the NLSY79, some key the features of job reallocation, namely the job finding and separation rates. The last chapter features an industry dynamics model where firms choose in which market to locate among the many available. The paper produces endogenous location choices and TFP evolution of the economy. The role of demand substitution patterns in creating persistence in firm level TFP is explored.
