Two essays on multinational production.
- 106 p.
Adviser: Robert E. Lucas, Jr.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2006.
The first essay analyzes the cross-country allocation and volume of multinational production (MP), quantifies its barriers, and assesses its impact on welfare. I introduce MP in a competitive, multi-country model with bilateral fixed costs and country-specific productivity which is able to highlight the role of absolute advantages, and predict zero as well as positive bilateral volumes following a gravity equation. Using data on bilateral sales of affiliates, I estimate bilateral fixed costs of MP matching simulated and actual moments. Estimates suggest that country-pairs twice as distant have 56% higher fixed costs, while policy variables such as corporate taxes, have small effects. Finally, welfare calculations show that there are large, unrealized gains of lowering costs to MP, particularly among the European Union.

The second essay studies the effects of foreign plants on the productivity of a host industry, using data on manufacturing in Chile. Foreign plants are larger than domestic plants, contribute significantly to output, but they are a small fraction of the total number of plants. To capture these facts, I adapt Melitz's (2003) model, linking foreign entry to changes in productivity through "reallocation" and "spillovers" effects. Using plant-level data, I find that: (i) foreign plants are more productive than domestic plants, but this is sensitive to productivity measures used; (ii) industries with foreign entry have more, and more productive new domestic plants; (iii) foreign entry is only weakly correlated with domestic exit; and (iv) there are positive spillovers from foreign to domestic plants within the same industry and region.
