In the first part we present the Hagedorn/deconfinement phase transition in weakly coupled large N gauge theories on a class of compact manifolds. This phase transition takes place at a temperature of the order of the inverse length of the manifold. The low temperature phase has a free energy of order one and is characterized by a stringy growth in its density of states. The high temperature phase has a free energy of order N2. This phase transitions can be continuously related to the flat space deconfinement transition in the case of confining gauge theories and to the Hawking-Page phase transition in the case of N = 4.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 # $a In the fourth part we study the supersymmetric partition function of N = 4 super Yang-Mills with gauge group SU( N) on K3 in the large N, fixed g limit and show that it undergoes a first order phase transition at the S-duality invariant value of the gauge coupling g. This gauge theory can be realized in string theory on the worldvolume of D4/D0 branes wrapped on K3, where we expect a similar phase transition.
520 # $a In the second part we show that pure SU(N) Yang-Mills on a small S3, undergoes a first order deconfinement phase transition as a function of the temperature. To do this we evaluate the canonical partition function of the theory including up to 3-loop diagrams. We present a possible phase diagram of large N pure Yang-Mills on an S3 as a function of the coupling.
