Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2009.
This dissertation discusses transition metal complexes of N-heterocyclic ligands that can serve as catalysts in greener chemical transformations. Chapters one and two cover work on metal-catalyzed reactions that shows potential for high atom efficiency. A series of alcohol activation reaction catalyzed mainly by an iridium(III) terpyridine compound are discussed in chapter one. Chapter two features work on exploring a two-step catalytic oxidation-rearrangement route to amides using amines and aldehydes as starting materials. In Chapter three, research on the coordination behavior of bis-N-heterocyclic carbene ligands as ligands for catalysis is presented.
