For Walter Pater, 'true aesthetic criticism' takes place when one isworking across the arts, acknowledging differences of media and defining their 'limitations', but always seeking possibilities of interconnection. Only in this way can the arts and aesthetic criticism 'lend each other new forces'. This collection of thirteen essays by a team of international scholars vividly demonstrates the interartistic reach and continuing significance of his writings. Part I concentrates specificallyon nineteenth-century painting and Victorian museum theory. Part II explores the dynamic arts, both traditional (sculpture, music, drama) andcontemporary (photography and cinema). Part III investigates Pater's theory and practices of writing aesthetic discourse. Throughout, the argument is made thatfor Pater, critique is enabled in the act of transgressing both artistic and sensory boundaries.

"The multidisciplinary aesthetics of Walter Pater, the nineteenth century's most provocative critic, are explored by an international team of scholars. True aesthetic criticism takes place working across the arts, Pater insists: acknowledging the differences between media, but seeking possibilities of interconnection"--
