The History and Politics of the Cyprus Conflict is a case study of the fortunes of a divided society released from colonial rule, but in this case the solution to the conflict was found, not bythe colonial power, but by the 'mother' countries, Greece and Turkey. Consequently whenthat solutionbroke down in 1963 they could not avoid involvement in the dispute that was a danger to concord inthe Eastern Mediterranean, and thus to NATO. Attempts made by the Cypriots to resolve the dispute through the UN and the EU are carefully examined, with international pressures taken fully into account. A solution is vital for Turkey's progress to EU accession. Possible future scenarios are outlined in this book.
