Thesis (M.E.S.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2009.
Ecotourism appeals to communities faced with economic decline since it may provide social and economic benefits. However, some question its ability to deliver on its potential. Advocate Harbour and Spencer's Island, two rural communities, identified ecotourism development at Cape Chignecto Provincial Park as a means to socioeconomic development. This study sought to determine the socio-economic impacts of ecotourism at Cape Chignecto Provincial Park on these communities. I carried out document reviews, participant observation and interviews to answer this question. Data analysis revealed a shift in the local economy to include a number of tourist related businesses as well as increased employment opportunities. The communities also benefit from improved infrastructure and access to education and training. The study concludes by recognising that ecotourism is a viable option for rural communities, but their expectations must be realistic since growth in the industry takes some amount of time.
