In this thesis, I consider second-order parametric interactions in configurations allowing multiple three-wave mixing processes to co-exist. In one configuration, a multilayered nonlinear medium with Fresnel reflections at the boundaries allows the generation of two sets of three waves traveling in opposite directions to interact parametrically. In another, two sets of three waves are nonlinearly mixed in a two-mode waveguide.

520 $a A generalized model for second-order parametric interactions in 1-D multilayered photonic structures was developed, accounting for collinear oblique waves and partial pump depletion. This model is used to assess the performance of parametric devices in structures such as photonic-crystal microcavities. I found that the gain in optical parametric amplification has a resonance-like dependence on the pump intensity, turning large peak gain into strong attenuation at greater intensities, which suggests that the device can operate as a novel optical switch.
520 $a The generation of down-converted photons by means of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in nonlinear two-mode planar, circular, and diffused-channel waveguides was also studied. These configurations confine the photons to a single direction of propagation with a binary spatial degree of freedom associated with the two waveguide modes. This creates a new type of entanglement in photonic waveguides, namely modal entanglement: two down-converted photons are generated in different modes such that if one photon is in one mode, the other photon will be in the other mode. The inherent phase mismatches of the two processes are corrected simultaneously using uniform periodic poling. With entangled photons generated in a waveguide structure, I designed complete photonic circuits to perform quantum information processing operations on a single chip implemented in single-mode and two-mode diffused-channel Ti:LiNbO3 waveguides. This technology can be used to generate entangled photons in frequency or polarization or mode number, rotate and analyze modal qubits, and realize an important operation such as the C-NOT gate.
