The requirement for low power consumption in RF devices such as mobile devices, micro-sensor nodes, and other battery-powered or self-powered electronics presents many opportunities as well as many challenges for RF designers. Advances in IC processing technology have allowed increased system and function integration. However, passive devices available on-chip are poor in quality and they have made little improvements with technology scaling. Consequently, power consumption in RF products has not improved or even deteriorated in the last several years, and it has become a bottleneck for further performance improvements. Particularly, frequency generation is impaired from lack of high quality on-chip inductors.

This dissertation presents work on low power frequency generation techniques using high quality MEMS RF resonator FBARs, exploring a possibility for continued power reduction realizable in low power RF designs. Several low power FBAR-based oscillators as well as phase-locked loops are designed, implemented, and tested to demonstrate uncompromising phase noise and jitter performance at low power.
