This work is the first to study the gentlemen's clubs that were an important feature the Late Victorian landscape in London, and the first to discover the secret history of clubmen and their world. This book places the English gentleman at center stage, detailing how clubland dramatically shaped nineteenth and early twentieth-century ideas about gender, domesticity, power, class, and the city.
