Pentacene has the extended &pgr;-conjugated electronic structure which gives rise to a small HOMO-LUMO gap. However, due to the low solubility and susceptibility to photodegradation, there are some limitations for pentacene applications. Thus, it is . necessary to synthesize functionalized pentacenes in order to improve the solubility and stability.

In this research, different alkylthio-substituted pentacenes were synthesized and were characterized by NMR, MALDI-MS, UV-vis, and FT-IR. The newly synthesized pentacene derivatives show excellent solubility and photo-oxidative resistance. Their HOMO-LUMO gaps are approximately ~1.94 eV which is smaller than pentacene ~2.21 eV. They exhibit electron-donating properties and can be used as p-type semiconductors. We encountered difficulties in the aromatization and purification steps. To solve the problem, new experiments and methods were studied and utilized.

Functionalization of pentacene at the 6- and13- positions provides various chances to form oligomers or polymers which will have more unique properties for organic semiconductors, including promising charge carrier mobilities, high solubility and flexibility. Here, two major types of syntheses have been tried to form pentacene polymers and new "basket" shaped pentacene derivatives have been synthesized. Until now, the research of pentacene polymers still remain rare, but due to their potentially use for applications, more studies are under investigation.
