Human trafficking is a major security threat in Europe and the world today. It is a multi-faceted industry that affects all aspects of society and has far reaching consequences for governments and citizens around the world. It is not a linear problem; human trafficking can be analyzed as an immigration issue, human rights violation, economic black market activity, social conundrum, culturally tabooed profession, and when framed into a public policy, politically charged. The complexity of human trafficking lends itself to over-simplification when deduced to a mere immigration problem, and because it is a black market activity, human trafficking is very shallow in raw applicable data. To what extent is Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany effectively decreasing the proficiency of human sex trafficking in their perspective countries through the use of demand or supply focused policies? In order to appreciate the complexity of human trafficking in Europe and attempt to offer country-specific policy recommendations, this paper will address the political, economic, and cultural aspects of human trafficking policies in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany. This will be followed by a French view of the problem. There will be an analysis of current anti-human trafficking policies, an analysis of black market economic incomes using a case model from Siddhart Kara's prostitution in Europe research; also a social analysis that focuses on movements, which either condone or abhor the presence of human trafficking in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany.
