This exploratory study sought to examine the use and adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) by Jamaican Micro, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (MSMEs). Utilizing Roger's Diffusion of Innovation theory as a framework, the study sought to examine the use and adoption patterns of ICTs by Jamaican MSMEs, their perceptions on their benefits and barriers, and the factors that influence their adoption. This research was guided by three research questions: (1) What effect do ICT characteristics have on the adoption of ICTs by Jamaican MSMEs? (2) What effect do demographic variables have on the use of ICTs by Jamaican MSMEs? (3) What effect do benefits and barriers have on the use of ICTs by Jamaican MSMEs?

A quantitative survey was distributed to 200 participants to examine the research questions. Multiple regression was the parametric test used to examine the data. The findings of the study show that relative advantage and complexity were the only ICT characteristics that proved to be significant in the adoption of ICTs by Jamaican MSMEs. Compatibility, trialability, observability and government support were not found to be significant factors for ICT adoption. Benefits also proved to be significant in the ICT adoption process for MSMEs, while barriers were not significant.

The study concluded that Jamaican MSMEs have adopted and are using ICTs, for basic purposes such as emails and information searches. Jamaican MSMEs are very aware of the benefits of ICTs, however there are still barriers inhibiting their adoption. Results have considerable implications for research, practice and government agencies whose aim is to improve the productivity and competitiveness of Jamaican MSMEs.
