Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 2016.
One of the largest literatures in the social sciences investigates how information affects people's attitudes and behaviors. Within political science, a common focus is on how democratic processes or outcomes might change if citizens were better informed--that is, if citizens possessed more information about politics. The starting point for this dissertation is that citizens vary widely in their understanding of politically relevant facts: some are informed, others are uninformed, and still others are misinformed. Yet, existing political science research focuses overwhelmingly on the first two categories, overlooking how misinformation affects public opinion and representation. This dissertation reports the results of three studies into the influence of misinformation in democratic politics. These studies examine the individual-level predictors of misinformation, the influence of misinformation on citizens' opinions, and the effects of misinformation on representation, respectively. I conclude with a discussion of implications for our understanding of the role of (mis)information in democratic politics.
