This study explores the nature of the relationship individuals form over time to speech and the act of speaking, whether in their native or an acquired language, with a particular focus on the differences in how native and non-native tongues are utilized in the service of both expressing (i.e., revealing, being "seen" and "understood") and obscuring (i.e., masking) the inner self. Aside from the examinations of the manifest content, attempts were made to elucidate the latent content of the narratives gleaned in the individual speech patterns, silences and other non-linguistic markers that color interpersonal communication and affect a person's understanding of self and interpersonal experiences.
