Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are attractive as energy storage devices because of their higher volumetric and gravimetric energy densities than the nickel metal hydride batteries that are currently used in hybrid vehicles. However, conventional lithium ion battery electrolytes are volatile and flammable liquids, and therefore, limit the durability and temperature range of operation of the device. Any event that breaks the battery's hermetic seal could result in a fire due to the low flash point of conventional electrolytes.

520 $a The focus of this research is to design, synthesize, and establish structure--property correlations in lithium-ion conducting PEGylated membranes imbibed with ionic liquids (ILs) and a tetraglyme complex of lithium bis(trifluoromethyl)sulfonamide, toward developing rubber-like mechanically robust and thermally stable mebranes with relatively high lithium ion conductivity. The study reported in this dissertation can be divided into three parts. In the first part, three ether-derivatized ILs, whose cations are based on imidazolium, pyrrolidinium, and ammonium moieties, were synthesized, and their thermal and physicochemical properties were characterized. The anion was bis(trifluoromethyl)sulfonamide (bistriflamide, [Tf2N]). Three analogous alkylated ILs were synthesized and evaluated as references. The imidazolium ILs were denser, less viscous, and more ionic conductive than pyrrolidinium and ammoniumILs. The ether-derivatized ILs exhibited lower viscosity and higher ionic conductivity than the corresponding alkylated ILs. The dissolution of LiTf2N into the ILs (0.65 mmol g--1 concentration) resulted in a decrease in the ionic conductivity due to an increase in the viscosity of the solution over that of the neat IL. Raman spectroscopy showed that the ether-derivatized IL supported the dissociation of LiTf2N into Li+ ions with [Tf_2 N]-- and the degree of dissociation increased with a decrease in the concentration of LiTf 2N.
520 $a In the second part of the study, 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluroromethanesulfonyl)amide ([mEtMeIm][Tf2N], one of six ILs investigated in the first part) was blended with 1:1 complex of LiTf 2N and tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (tetraglyme, G4), denoted herein by [Li(G4)][Tf2N], to improve the conductivity of the electrolyte based on [Li(G4)][Tf2N] alone. The addition of [mEtMeIm][Tf 2N] to [Li(G4)][Tf2N] lowered the viscosity and increased the ionic conductivity of the blends. The blends also exhibited improved thermal stability in thermogravimetry experiments. The addition of unchelated LiTf 2N to [mEtMeIm][Tf2N] resulted in a decrease in ionic conductivity at all temperatures of measurement. However, when LiTf2N was added as a 1:1 complex with G4, the conductivity was higher, at the same molar concentration of LiTf2N. We also found that the complex mixture, comprising of three different ionic species (the lithium ion, and the ionic liquid cation and anion) and one nonionic compound (tetraglyme), of significantly different chemical structures and polarities, showed nearly linear mixing rules for density, viscosity and conductivity data.
520 $a In the third part, a series of copolymer membranes, composed of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and different mole fractions of each of the three different Tg-modifying comonomers, 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA), n-butyl acrylate (BA), and ethyl acrylate (EA), were prepared and characterized through dynamic mechanical analysis. For each comonomer, the glass transition temperature based on tan delta peak, as well as the activation energy of glass transition, determined using the single-frequency Chang, Thomas, and Sperling approach, decreased with an increase in the concentration of the comonomer. The Tg and activation energy of PEGDA-BA copolymer membranes were lower, at a given molar concentration of BA, than the other two PEGDA-comonomer membranes, with the same comonomer molar concentration. To impart ion conductivity to the membranes, [mEtMeIm][Tf 2N] and [Li(G4)][Tf2N] were incorporated in the polymer matrix. The effects of the type of comonomer, the comonomer concentrations in the copolymer matrix, and the presence of the [mEtMeIm][Tf2N] and G4, on ionic conductivity and mechanical properties were investigated. Among the three comonomers, ethyl acrylate had a lower plasticization effect on the polymer electrolyte membranes, but showed a larger enhancement in ionic conductivity, related to its lower activation energy of polymer segmental motion. It was found that membranes containing both [Li(G4)][Tf2N] and [mEtMeIm][Tf 2N] exhibited the highest ionic conductivity. Ionic conductivity values of 4.6 microS•cm--1 at 10 °C and 589.4 microS•cm --1 at 85 °C, along with the Young's modulus of 31 MPa and elongation at break of about 10%, were achieved.
520 $a The polymer membranes with good ionic conductivity, thermal stability, and mechanical toughness developed in this research seem promising as electrolytes for lithium ion batteries over a relatively wide temperature range.
