Thesis (M.A.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 2018.
This study examines the Navy Method, the practice of Japanese language education, and student life in the Navy Japanese Language School (JLS) which was operated at the University of Colorado Boulder campus during World War II. The archival materials from the US Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School Archival Project form the basis of this study. Unlike the Army Method that is known as a pedagogy used in the Army Specialized Training Program, the Navy Method taught all the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as classical Japanese based on the Japanese textbooks written by Naganuma Naoe. The School also provided living conditions that enabled the students to focus on their study and various learning opportunities outside the classroom. A close study of the Navy Method might bring about a better understanding of the history of Japanese language education in the United States.
