Thesis (M.A.)--Clark University, 2018.
This thesis examines the gender politics of interlocutors within the gothic genre who promote their perverse world views through multi-level narrative structures. I investigate the narrative scaffolding of H.P. Lovecraft's "The Picture in the House", Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to reveal the problematic nature of omniscient and first-person interlocutors who pervert their cultural ideology for individualistic gain. The interlocutor's embedding of social ideology within narrative frames destabilizes both narrator and narrative, which transitively signals the narrator as unreliable narrators and the narratives unstable. I re-examine each text after the reveal of the unreliable narrator and subsequent textual collapse to elucidate how the ambivalence of the narrators and narrative structures exposes additional textual horrors through the promotion of singularist world views.
