Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how leaders in organizations whose workforce includes virtual teams describe the impact of social media interactions on employee engagement, employee motivation, and team building.Methodology: This qualitative study identified 12 leaders of virtual teams who were purposefully selected based on meeting the predetermined criteria. Data were collected through a series of semi-structured, in-person interviews with leaders of dispersed or non-collocated teams with a virtual presence. Interviews were conducted by the researcher, which addressed different aspects of the research questions. Upon conclusion of the interviews, the researcher analyzed transcriptions of each participant and developed codes for emergent themes. The coded entries generated the data, which addressed the research problem. Triangulation of data was achieved through analysis of identified themes, review and observation of posts, meeting notes and agendas.Findings: Insight gained from the results of the study aids other leaders of virtual teams on platform, guidance for resource dedication, and practical applied strategies through a variety of findings. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study as supported by the literature, leaders of virtual teams describe social media interactions as having a positive impact on employee engagement, motivation, and team building.Recommendations: Further research is recommended to extend the study to a larger sample size. Replication of the study with virtual teams in other industries and/or human services would expand the findings. A comparative study between leaders’ of collocated and non-collocated teams descriptions of the impact of social media on employee engagement, employee motivation, and team building would support increased development of the knowledge base.
