This study examines the phonological grouping of Mandarin intra-syllabic segments. The study is guided by three main research questions: (1) what is the status of onglides (i.e. the high vowel preceding the nuclear vowel) and offglides (i.e. the high vowel following the nuclear vowel) in the Mandarin Chinese syllable structure? (2) how does orthographic information influence phonological processing? Specifically, do speakers of the same native language system who learn different Mandarin transcription systems parse the Mandarin syllables in the same way? (3) does distracting the participants from the orthography influence the orthographic effect? Two groups of Mandarin native speakers who have learned different transcription systems, Pinyin and Zhuyin, were recruited to do three types of tasks: mapping, monitoring, and deletion. Two modes were designed to see if Mandarin Chinese native speakers can make decisions without the deployment of orthography. The first mode, Foreign Mode, consists of both Mandarin items and foreign language items which the native speakers have never learned, and the second mode, Mandarin Mode, contains only Mandarin stimuli. The results show that both groups agree that the initial consonants and the following onglides are two separable sounds. In addition, offglides sit at the same position in the syllable as nasal codas. However, the two groups do not completely agree how onglides should be parsed. For Zhuyin users, onglides are neither in the onset nor in the rime; they are at the head of “final tier,” a constituent which is further divided into the onglide and rime. For Pinyin users, where onglides should go is more ambiguous. They may be part of the onset cluster or the head of the final. The fact that the two groups reacted to the same sounds differently in these tasks indicate that the grouping of intra-syllabic units in Mandarin syllables can be influenced by the transcription system learned. Furthermore, although the Foreign Mode did not stop the native speakers from resorting to their Mandarin transcription system when the tasks were difficult, distracting the participants from the orthography did affect how much orthography influenced the decisions.
