Measurements of strength can help to identify injury risk thresholds and overall athletic performance; however, little research has been done identifying how strength variables change throughout a competitive sport season. Purpose: To compare hamstring to quadriceps (H:Q) strength ratios and peak torque output values between male and female, NCAA Division I, soccer athletes over the course of a competitive season. Methods: Thirty-four male (Mage = 19.32 ± 1.35 years, n = 16) and female (Mage = 19.83 ± 1.25 years, n = 18), NCAA Division I, soccer athletes volunteered for this study. Pre-, mid-, and postseason H:Q ratios and peak torque output values were measured using an isokinetic dynamometer at angular velocities of 60, 180, 300 deg/sec. Results: Mean H:Q strength ratios significantly decreased from preseason to postseason (p = 0.038) with greater decreases in male athletes. Mean quadriceps peak torque output values significantly increased from preseason to postseason (p < 0.05), while mean hamstring peak torque values showed a non-significant increase. Mean peak torque output values were higher in males than females during all testing sessions (p < 0.05). Mean quadriceps peak torque output values were shown to be significantly higher in the dominant limb compared to the non-dominant limb (p = 0.028). Conclusions: Over the course of a competitive season, deficits in H:Q strength ratios occurred in male and female collegiate soccer athletes due to unequal increases in hamstring and quadriceps peak torque output. Quadriceps strength increased at a greater rate than hamstring strength from pre- to postseason. Isokinetic H:Q strength ratios and peak torque output values should be utilized by athletic trainers, strength and conditioning specialists, and coaches to track and address deficits in male and female soccer athletes across the competitive season.
