This thesis's focal point is to examine the potential impact of peer-to-peer lending platforms on the banking industry. This research is different from previous studies in two dimensions. First, to the best of my knowledge, the available studies related to this topic have focused on the impact of P2P loans only on commercial banks loans. To make the comparison analysis, I split banks into two groups saving banks (also called saving institutions) and commercial banks. The critical difference between saving and commercial banks is the local focus of saving banks. The assumption is that P2P loans will not impact saving and commercial banks in the same way. Saving banks may be specifically vulnerable to the threat of P2P loans. Second, most of the studies limited their investigations to the years 2009–2014, which was relevant but incomplete. What this research does is take a longer view with particular focus on the Novelty effect over the time as the industry matured, changed, or regulated. Our findings suggest that P2P platforms do not pose a substantial threat to the banking sector.
