Special education (SPED) teachers are members of multidisciplinary teams that make informed decisions regarding assistive technology (AT), and they may have students in the classroom that use AT. SPED teachers need training and knowledge on AT types and their implementation to make decisions and to support students in using the device. The purpose of this action research thesis was to examine SPED teachers’ feelings and perceptions on their training and knowledge in AT types and their implementation. This thesis also examined the supports that SPED teachers receive in AT implementation, and the supports they find most helpful. Certified SPED teachers completed an online survey that was created using the Qualtrics platform and distributed via email. Findings indicate that SPED teachers do not feel they receive appropriate AT training at the university level or at their place of employment. SPED teachers do feel they have the knowledge to identify and implement AT in the classroom, indicating that although SPED teacher perceive their training to be limited, they feel they have the knowledge to identify and implement AT. Collaboration was found to be a major theme when SPED teachers were asked about the supports they receive. The most common support reported as being most helpful was hands-on training, indicating that SPED teachers do not receive the supports that they feel are most helpful to them. It is recommended that SPED teachers be provided with specific supports that they find most helpful while also being offered hands-on-training using AT devices.
